Liminalita v románu Brama Stokera Drákula a dekadentní prvky díla

This these first characterizes the decadent elements of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula in the context of late Victorian literature and generally tries to define the concept of liminality according to the approach of Arnold van Gennep (Rites of Passage) and Victor Turner (The Ritual Process). The core of the work is the interpretation of the category of liminality based on a literary analysis of Stoker's novel, including the identification of motifs and themes related to the term liminality, and the concept of the supernatural and the category of otherness (the uncanny) as defined by S. Freud in Das Unheimliche. The thesis focuses on the topic of crossing the border between the human sphere and the supernatural world and tries to interpret the concept of liminality in the context of the work of the late Victorian period.

Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. The characters from the legends are used in context of archetypal criticism method. Considering the literature-critical perspective, the method of close reading is chosen. The Demon-Lover Theme in Several Texts of Anglo-American Literature

The thesis deals with a comparative analysis of the demon-lover motif in selected texts of English and American literature. The theoretical basis is the characteristics of the medieval ballad James Harris and some variations of the examined representation in the collection of traditional ballads by F. J. Child. Particular attention is paid to the role of supernatural in relation to the issue of guilt and punishment, in this regard, also the romantic versions of M. G. Lewis, G. A. Bürger and K. J. Erben are considered. The following chapters deals with stories that develop the demon-lover motif (the post-war stories by E. Bowen and S. Jackson). The literary analysis focuses primarily on the trauma of personal and historical past, and the related persecution of the victim, committed to the promise, to show the deepening of the psychological and emotional significance of the traditional story.

Milbank This work deals with the conception of the supernatural by Henri de Lubac and the reception of this concept in work of Anglican theologian John Milbank, one of the leading representative of the Radical Orthodoxy movement. The introductory part of the work explained the concepts of naturalness, supernature and grace and their mutual relationship, as well as the historical development of theological thinking about the supernatural destination of man. In the following chapters we elucidate the way how these theologians are dealing with the question of transcend destination of the human being. Female characters as a medium of male authorities in Arthur Miller's The Crucible and William Golding's The Double Tongue

The aim of this thesis is to examine the ways in which the female characters of two well-known works, namely William Golding's novel The Double Tongue (1995) and Arthur Miller's play The Crucible (1953), are exploited by male characters in pursuit of their ambitions. In spite of the works being set in different periods, they both develop the theme of male authorities abusing and misusing the inferior position of oftentimes adolescent women, bestowed on them by patriarchal society. The interpretation of both literary works is mainly based on historical and socio-cultural study of the periods as well as works of literary criticism. Abstracting the main features regarding the theme of this thesis that connect the two periods, the two literary works are compared. The theoretical part of the thesis provides the reader with a brief overview concerning the authors with a specific focus on the historical circumstances in which the works were written, and which influenced the content of the works. Second part of the theoretical section focuses on the historical and socio-cultural context in which the plots of the individual works take place.
